Experience Komodo National Park through a more refined and direct passage. Our private phinisi charters depart from Bali’s Benoa Harbor, presenting a seamless connection to the archipelago’s celebrated dive sites and terrestrial wonders. This exclusive route removes the need for a connecting flight to Labuan Bajo, allowing your expedition to begin the moment you step aboard. Secure your place on a premier diving liveaboard from Bali to Komodo.

The Direct Bali to Komodo Phinisi Experience

The conventional route to Komodo requires a flight to Labuan Bajo (LBJ), followed by a transfer to the harbor. Our service redefines this approach. The Komodo cruise from Bali is a continuous expedition, transforming the transit itself into a part of the discovery. Departing from the well-appointed Benoa Harbor in southern Bali, you will cross the Lombok Strait and sail east across the Flores Sea. This extended itinerary allows for exploration of remote islands such as Moyo and Satonda, which are inaccessible on shorter trips from Labuan Bajo. Our voyages, typically spanning seven days and six nights, are meticulously planned to follow favorable currents and conditions. The experience aboard a traditional, two-masted Indonesian phinisi schooner is central to the voyage. These handcrafted vessels, built by the Konjo people of South Sulawesi, offer an authentic maritime heritage combined with modern safety standards and cabin comforts. Opting for a phinisi Benoa to Komodo charter means more time spent in the water and less time navigating airports.

Sample 7-Day Diving & Exploration Itinerary: Benoa to Komodo

This itinerary illustrates a typical seven-day expedition, though all routes are subject to weather conditions and captain’s discretion to optimize wildlife encounters. The journey covers approximately 300 nautical miles, offering up to 18 dives for certified divers. See also: Home pricing.

  • Day 1: Benoa Harbor Departure & Gili Kondo. Boarding at 10:00 AM at Benoa Harbor, Bali. After a welcome briefing and lunch, we begin our eastward sail. The first stop is the tranquil Gili Kondo off the coast of East Lombok for a checkout dive and snorkel in calm, clear waters.
  • Day 2: Moyo Island & Satonda’s Volcanic Lake. Morning dives at Angel Reef near Moyo Island, known for its ribbon eels and vibrant coral walls. In the afternoon, we visit Satonda Island to swim in its saltwater volcanic crater lake, a geological formation created by the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora.
  • Day 3: Gili Banta & The Sape Strait. We arrive at the edge of the Komodo region. Gili Banta offers challenging drift dives at sites like “Highway to Hell,” where strong currents attract grey reef sharks, dogtooth tuna, and Spanish mackerel. This is a highlight of any diving liveaboard Bali Komodo trip.
  • Day 4: Northern Komodo: Castle Rock & Crystal Rock. We enter the core of Komodo National Park. Today is dedicated to high-voltage diving. Castle Rock and Crystal Rock are submerged pinnacles swept by powerful currents, creating a feeding ground for whitetip sharks, giant trevallies, and schooling fusiliers. Water temperatures here can dip to 25°C.
  • Day 5: Central Komodo: Manta Point & Padar Island. A morning dedicated to Karang Makassar, famously known as Manta Point. We perform multiple drift dives in search of the resident population of reef mantas (Manta alfredi) at their cleaning stations. In the late afternoon, we make the iconic trek to the summit of Padar Island for its panoramic vistas of tri-colored beaches.
  • Day 6: Rinca Island Dragons & Pink Beach. An early morning guided walk on Rinca Island with a certified park ranger to observe the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) in its natural habitat. Afterward, we relocate to Pantai Merah, or Pink Beach, for diving, snorkeling, and relaxing on sands colored by red Foraminifera organisms. This is a classic stop on a Bali to Komodo phinisi charter.
  • Day 7: Siaba Besar & Disembarkation in Labuan Bajo. A final morning dive at Siaba Besar, a gentle site often called “Turtle Town.” After breakfast, we cruise to Labuan Bajo harbor for an 11:00 AM disembarkation and transfer to Komodo Airport (LBJ) for your onward flight.

Our Fleet: Authentic Phinisi Vessels, Modern Comforts

Our fleet consists of traditionally crafted phinisi schooners, each built with ironwood and teak, reflecting centuries of Indonesian maritime artisanship. While the design is classic, the amenities are contemporary. Each vessel is fully equipped for long-range expeditions, ensuring safety and comfort throughout your Komodo cruise from Bali. The limited number of cabins, typically between five and seven per vessel, ensures an intimate and personalized experience far from the more crowded day boats operating out of Labuan Bajo.

Komodo National Park Diving: A Detailed Overview

Diving in Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site established in 1980, is a dynamic experience defined by the powerful currents of the Indonesian Throughflow. This exchange between the Indian and Pacific Oceans delivers a constant supply of nutrients, supporting an extraordinary density of marine life. A diving liveaboard Bali Komodo expedition is the most effective way to access the park’s premier and more remote sites. Water temperatures generally range from 26-29°C (78-84°F), but can drop to 21°C (70°F) in the south. We recommend a 3mm or 5mm wetsuit. Due to the strong and often unpredictable currents, a PADI Advanced Open Water certification with a minimum of 50 logged dives is strongly recommended. All divers are required to use a surface marker buoy (SMB) and reef hook. Key dive sites like Batu Bolong, a pinnacle teeming with anthias and reef fish, and The Cauldron (Shotgun), where currents propel divers through a channel, showcase the park’s raw energy and biodiversity.

Beyond the Dive: Signature Land Excursions

While the underwater realm is a primary focus, the terrestrial landscapes of the Lesser Sunda Islands are equally compelling. Our Bali to Komodo phinisi itinerary is designed with a balance of aquatic and land-based activities. The trek on Padar Island is a highlight, offering a moderate climb to a viewpoint that reveals three distinct bays, each with a different colored sand beach—white, black, and pink. The famous Pink Beach itself is a destination for snorkeling and photography, its unique hue derived from crushed red organ pipe coral mixed with white sand. The principal land excursion is the encounter with the Komodo dragon on Rinca or Komodo Island. Accompanied by official park rangers for safety and interpretation, you will walk through the dry savanna habitat of the world’s largest lizard, a prehistoric reptile that can reach lengths of 3 meters (10 feet). These excursions provide a comprehensive appreciation for the entire Komodo ecosystem.
